Welcome to the summer edition of our Teaching School Hub newsletter. As we approach the end of another busy term, it is an ideal opportunity to reflect on the dedication and commitment demonstrated by colleagues across our schools this year. We would like to extend our sincere thanks to everyone for their continued efforts in supporting continued professional development across the region.

We wish you all a restful summer break and look forward to continuing to work with you next year.

The Unity Teaching School Hub Team in 2026/27

After leading Unity Teaching School Hub since its initial designation, Andy Samways is moving to a new role in September, when he joins Zenith Multi Academy Trust as Director of Learning and Innovation.

We are delighted that Karen Sheargold, who has been leading within our Appropriate Body Service and our delivery of ECTP and NPQs, takes on the leadership of Unity Teaching School Hub in the role of Teaching School Hub Lead. Alongside the continuity this provides, we are excited to be welcoming Elizabeth Barber as our Assistant Teaching School Hub Lead in September; Elizabeth brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the Hub's work and is looking forward to connecting with schools in the autumn term.

In June, we welcomed Tyler Cooke to our operations and management team, working alongside our experienced team colleagues, Serena Locksmith (Appropriate Body Lead), Helen Main (Appropriate Body Manager) and Jo Francis (ECTP Manager).

Contact addresses for our team are:

Congratulations to all ECTs completing their induction this term. Induction Completion Confirmation Certificates will be ready to download via Access Your Teaching Qualifications (AYTQ) digital service at the start of the new academic year.

Employing new ECTs in September

Our training sessions have begun for the new 26/27 cohort of ECTs. These are intended for Headteachers, Induction Tutors and ECTs, providing an overview of our Appropriate Body's role in statutory induction. If you are yet to join one of our sessions, please use this booking form to register for one of the following September dates:

  • Thursday 10th September
  • Wednesday 30th September
  • Thursday 15th October

Employing supply staff (at any point)

ECTs who have not completed induction, can be employed on short-term supply contracts of less than 1 term. If employed for more than 1 term, they must be registered for induction.

Schools are advised to be aware of the following conditions around supply teaching and date of QTS found in the Induction for Early Career Teachers statutory guidance (p15):

2.14 A qualified teacher who gained QTS and who has not completed their induction period, can only undertake short-term supply work of less than one term in a relevant school for a maximum period of 5 years from the point of award of QTS. This is a fixed time limit with no discretion to extend.
2.15 After 5 years from the point of the award of QTS a qualified teacher who has not completed their induction period can only teach in a relevant school if they are employed in a post of one term or longer and are undertaking statutory induction.
2.16 The headteacher/principal or supply agency is responsible for ensuring that a teacher who has not satisfactorily completed an induction period is eligible to carry out short-term supply work.

Reports and Evidence

Please ensure formal observations of each ECT’s teaching are uploaded to ECT Manager. Evidence is required across the induction period as part of our quality assurance checks; final assessment and recommendation reports cannot be signed off by the Appropriate Body without sight of this evidence.

Working with Neurodiverse ECTs during induction

This topic will inform some of our Breakfast Briefing sessions across the coming year. We are currently redesigning some of our resources and processes with neurodiverse teachers in mind and looking to work with ITT providers and school/Trust HR/People and Culture departments to explore successful strategies and tools, including assistive and artificial technologies.

If you or anyone in your organisation would be interested in being involved in/contributing to this work, please contact slocksmith@unitysp.co.uk.
